Lime Wash & Moroccan Clay: Two Organic Finishes You Can Mix in One Room

Two of Meoded's most requested organic wall finishes — Lime Wash and Moroccan Clay — are both approachable enough for a confident DIYer, and both are having a moment in Calgary right now. They create a similar mood (soft, natural, handcrafted) through very different techniques, which makes them a natural pair to use in the same room, or even side by side on the same wall.

Lime Wash: Brushed-On, Cloudy, Old-World Texture

Lime Wash is a slaked limestone mineral paint. As it carbonates and cures, the lime "blooms," creating soft color variation and light streaking — no two walls ever look quite the same. It's brushed on, forgiving to apply, and works on both interior and exterior surfaces.

Lime Wash Coverage (per Meoded's official specs)

• Quart: ~50–75 sq ft, 2-coat application
• Gallon: ~200–300 sq ft, 2-coat application

Coverage depends on surface porosity and texture — always size up rather than down if you're between quantities.

How to Apply Lime Wash

1. Prep: surface clean, dust-free, free of loose or flaking material. New drywall needs a PVA primer; previously glossy surfaces need sanding plus a multi-purpose primer.
2. Base coat: apply two coats of Lime Wash Base Coat, allowing dry time between coats.
3. First coat: apply with a Meoded Lime Wash brush in a cross-hatch or multi-directional pattern, keeping a wet edge. Allow a minimum of 8 hours to dry.
4. Second coat: apply the same way. A third coat can be added for a more uniform look.
5. Exterior applications: dilute the first coat 10% with water over porous surfaces (brick, cement, stucco), then dampen with a sponge before the second coat. Allow a minimum of 7 days cure before rain or freezing temperatures.
6. Sealer (recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, high-traffic areas): after 48–72 hours dry time, apply 2–3 coats of Stain Shield natural-look sealer.

Lime Wash should not be applied below 55°F, above 85°F, or in direct sun.

Moroccan Clay: Troweled, Smooth, Dimensional Plaster

Moroccan Clay is Meoded's next-generation natural wall finish, formulated with real clay for a smooth, matte, hand-troweled look with soft movement and visual depth. Where Lime Wash is loose and brushy, Moroccan Clay is refined and dimensional — and it's built for durability in busier rooms. It's an interior-only finish.

Moroccan Clay Coverage (per Meoded's official specs)

• Quart: ~30–35 sq ft, 2-coat application
• Gallon: ~120–140 sq ft, 2-coat application
• 4-Gallon: ~480–560 sq ft, 2-coat application

How to Apply Moroccan Clay

1. Prep: surface should be smooth, clean, and dust-free — Level 5 drywall gives the best result.
2. Prime: PVA primer on new drywall, or sanding plus a multi-purpose primer on previously painted sheen surfaces, then one coat of Meoded Quartz Primer (3–5 hours dry time). Flat, previously-painted walls only need the Quartz Primer.
3. First coat: apply thinly and evenly with a stainless steel rounded-edge trowel or spatula, covering the whole wall. Allow at least 8 hours to dry. (Use Meoded's Whiteout Trowel for light colors to avoid dark trowel marks.)
4. Second coat: lightly sand the first coat if needed (180–220 grit), then apply the second coat with a tight, overlapping patch technique — avoid heavy pressure, which can create unwanted shine.
5. Sealer/wax: after 24+ hours dry time, apply two coats of Stain Shield for a matte, protected finish, or a coat of Hydrowax if you want a bit more sheen.

Using Lime Wash and Moroccan Clay Together

These two finishes are designed to be mixed in the same project. A few ways we see it work well:

• Moroccan Clay on the walls, Lime Wash on the ceiling — a smooth, dimensional plaster look at eye level with soft, cloud-like texture overhead.
• Moroccan Clay in high-touch zones (hallways, entryways, behind a bed) paired with Lime Wash in lower-traffic rooms where its softer texture and lower cost per square foot go further.
• Same room, different walls — Moroccan Clay on a feature wall, Lime Wash on the remaining walls, tied together with matching or complementary tones from Meoded's 88-color palette.
• Interior/exterior continuity — since Moroccan Clay is interior-only, use Lime Wash to carry a related tone from an interior accent wall out onto an exterior-facing wall, porch, or fireplace surround.

Both are fully tintable — using universal tints or our in-store machine colorants — so pairing them in coordinating or contrasting shades is straightforward.
