Touch-ups are one of the most common paint frustrations, and the fix is almost always the same: use the exact same paint. Why touch-ups sometimes show

A touch-up stands out for a few predictable reasons: the sheen doesn't match, the colour is slightly off, or the paint is applied differently than the original coat. Even the “same” colour from a different product line or sheen will flash differently in the light. And paint applied with a brush over a wall that was originally rolled leaves a different texture that your eye picks up instantly. Get the paint, the sheen, and the method to match, and the repair melts into the wall.

Rule #1: same paint, same colour, same sheen — same formula

The single most important thing is to use the identical paint: the same brand, the same product line (Regal Select, Aura, ben, Scuff-X, and so on), the same colour, the same sheen, and ideally the same tint formula from the same store. Two gallons of the “same” colour can differ slightly if they were tinted on different equipment or to a different version of the formula. That's why we keep your exact formula on file, and why saving your original can matters — it's your recipe for a perfect match later. When you can, touch up straight from the can you used originally.

Rule #2: apply it the same way

Match the method to the original coat. For a rolled wall, use a small roller (a mini or “weenie” roller) rather than a brush so the texture matches. Feather the edges — work from the centre of the repair outward with a light touch so there's no hard line. Use thin coats and let them dry fully. On larger or more visible repairs, it's often best to repaint the whole wall corner to corner; walls break at corners, so a full-wall recoat guarantees a seamless result.

Save your paint — and your formula

A little record-keeping now saves a headache later. Keep leftover paint sealed and labelled with the room it went in. Snap a photo of the can's label, which lists the colour name and number, the product line, the sheen, and the tint formula. That photo is all we need to reproduce your colour exactly, even years down the road.

Can I just use a similar colour? For an invisible repair, no — even a close colour or a different sheen will show. Match the exact colour, sheen, and product, and keep the formula on file.

My leftover paint dried out. Can you remake it? Yes. As long as we have the colour and formula (a photo of the old label is perfect), we can mix you a fresh, exact-match can.

Does the sheen really matter that much? Absolutely — sheen is often more noticeable than colour on a touch-up. Matte, eggshell, pearl, and semi-gloss all reflect light differently, so match the original.
