That strong "fresh paint" smell is mostly volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, evaporating into your air. Modern paint technology means you no longer have to accept it as the price of a new colour.
What are VOCs?
VOCs are compounds released as paint dries. High levels can cause odour, headaches and irritation, a particular concern in homes with kids, pets, seniors or anyone sensitive to fumes. In Calgary, where windows are closed much of the year, low-VOC choices matter even more.
The detail most people miss: the colorant
A paint can be zero-VOC in the can and still pick up VOCs when colorant is added at the counter. Benjamin Moore's Gennex colorant system is zero-VOC, so paint stays zero-VOC after it's tinted to your colour. It's worth asking about at any paint store.
Which Benjamin Moore lines are zero-VOC?
Natura is a zero-VOC waterborne paint, also GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions, popular for nurseries and bedrooms. Ultra Spec 500, the contractor-grade line, is zero-VOC too, is eligible for LEED v4 credit and carries MPI's X-Green designation.
Tips for a healthier paint job
- Open windows and run a fan while you paint and for a day or two after.
- Choose a zero-VOC paint for bedrooms, nurseries and living spaces.
- Ask whether the tint system is also zero-VOC.
- Give the paint time to fully cure before heavy use.
