“Do I really need to prime?” It's one of the most common questions we get — and the answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no. Primer isn't always necessary, but when it is, skipping it is how good paint jobs go bad. Here's when to prime, and which primer to reach for.
What primer actually does
Primer is a preparation coat that does three main jobs: it helps paint stick to the surface, it blocks stains and old colours from bleeding through, and it creates a uniform surface so your finish coat looks even. Not every job needs all three, which is why priming isn't always required.
When you should prime
- Bare or new surfaces — new drywall, patched areas, bare wood, or masonry soak up paint unevenly and need a primer first.
- Big colour changes — going from dark to light (or covering a bold colour), a tinted primer saves you coats of expensive finish paint.
- Stains and problem areas — water stains, smoke, marker, grease, or tannin-prone woods need a stain-blocking primer or they'll ghost through.
- Glossy or slick surfaces — previously glossy trim, tile, laminate, or metal need a bonding primer so new paint can grip.
- Odour or smoke damage — a sealing primer locks it in.
When you can skip it
If you're repainting a clean, previously painted wall in a similar colour and the surface is in good shape, a quality self-priming paint is usually enough — no separate primer needed. Premium paints build well and often cover in two coats on sound surfaces.
Which primer to use
- New drywall — a drywall/PVA primer for an even, sealed base.
- Glossy or hard-to-stick surfaces — a bonding primer such as Insl-X STIX grabs onto slick surfaces.
- Stains and stubborn spots — a stain-blocking primer like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start or an Insl-X problem-solver.
- Exterior and specialty jobs — there's a right primer for wood, masonry, and metal too.
