Flat, Eggshell, or Semi-Gloss? How to Choose the Right Paint Sheen

You've picked the perfect colour — but there's one more decision that changes how it looks and how it lasts: the sheen. Sheen is how shiny the dried paint is, and it matters just as much as colour. The right sheen makes a room look its best and hold up to real life; the wrong one shows every flaw or scuffs within a month. Here's how to choose.

The basic trade-off

As a rule, the higher the sheen, the more durable and washable the paint — but the more it highlights surface imperfections. Lower sheens hide flaws and look soft and rich, but they can be harder to scrub. Almost every sheen decision is a balance between hiding imperfections and standing up to cleaning and wear.

The sheens, from flat to gloss

• Flat / Matte — no shine, hides wall flaws beautifully, gives a rich, velvety look. Best for ceilings, low-traffic bedrooms, and walls that aren't perfectly smooth. Modern mattes like those in Benjamin Moore Regal Select and Aura are far more washable than flats used to be.
• Eggshell — a soft, low-sheen finish and the most popular choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. It hides flaws well while being easier to wipe than flat.
• Pearl / Satin — a warm, subtle glow with good moisture and scuff resistance. The go-to for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and kids' rooms.
• Semi-Gloss — noticeably shiny, tough, and highly washable. The classic choice for trim, doors, baseboards, and cabinets.
• High-Gloss — a hard, almost glassy finish for a bold, furniture-like look on doors, trim, and accent pieces. Stunning, but it shows every imperfection, so prep has to be flawless.

A quick room-by-room cheat sheet

Ceilings: flat. Main living areas and bedrooms: matte or eggshell. Kitchens, baths, hallways, and kids' rooms: eggshell to pearl or satin. Trim, doors, and cabinets: semi-gloss (or high-gloss for drama). When in doubt in a busy family home, step up one level in sheen for easier cleaning.

A few tips

Higher sheens show wall imperfections and roller marks, so smoother prep matters more as you go up. Keep your sheen consistent within a surface — touch-ups in a different sheen will always show. And remember sheen shifts how a colour reads: the same colour looks slightly lighter and shinier in semi-gloss than in matte.
