Meoded Lime Wash - Calgary

Meoded Lime Wash is a unique slaked limestone mineral coating that creates a beautiful weathered plaster-like finish on almost any interior and exterior surface. Meoded Lime Wash is formulated to easily achieve a matte, mottled finish with a soft touch using a two coat brush application. As the carbonation process begins, the lime ‘blooms’ to create natural color variations with slight streaking. Check color before use. Stir Lime Wash thoroughly before and during use. Interior and Exterior applications require a different technique.

Not recommended for wood, glazed/sealed brick, floors, or wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Recommended System

Whether you need a base coat depends entirely on how absorbent the surface is. This is the single most important decision in a lime wash project.

• Bare brick, stone, block or stucco — no base coat. These are porous, so the lime soaks in and carbonates into the surface, bonding chemically rather than sitting on it. Meoded is explicit that no primer is needed here, and adding an acrylic base coat would seal the pores the lime needs to reach.
• Drywall, plaster or anything already painted — base coat required. Non-absorbent, so there's nothing for the lime to bond into. Apply 2 coats of Lime Wash Base Coat, 5–8 hours apart, before you start.
• Previously painted brick: sand it back and treat it as a painted surface. Worth knowing that base-coating brick gives up the breathability that makes lime wash outlast paint on masonry in the first place.
• Apply: Brush on 2 coats of Lime Wash with a box brush, allowing a minimum of 8 hours (up to 12 for more mottling) between coats.
• Sealing is usually unnecessary. Lime wash is meant to breathe, and sealing reduces that, slightly darkens the colour and changes the texture. Seal only for a backsplash, constant water contact, or a wall that needs wiping down — and use Stain Shield, after a minimum 48-hour cure.
• Exterior: allow 7 days before exposure to rain or cold after the final coat.
