Base Coat is required on non-absorbent surfaces — drywall, plaster, or anything already painted. On bare brick, stone, block or stucco you don't need it at all, and using it there would seal the pores the lime wash needs to bond into.

The Lime Wash Kit builder sorts this out for you and takes 15% off the whole kit.

Meoded’s Lime Wash Base Coat is a premium-quality, water-based, 100% acrylic primer formulated to be used as a base coat for Meoded Lime Wash. The easy-to-use formula is created to properly absorb Meoded’s Lime Wash to help achieve the right finish for your project. For best results, two coats are recommended.

    Specifications

    • Type: 100% acrylic, water-based primer
    • Coverage: 200–350 sq ft per gallon (3.79 L), 2 coats; 50–87 sq ft per quart
    • Dry Time: 5–8 hours between coats
    • VOC: <50 g/L
    • Application Temperature: 50–95°F (10–35°C)
    • Weather: No rain within 24 hours of application

    Recommended System

Two coats beneath Meoded Lime Wash on any non-absorbent surface. What goes underneath the base coat depends on what you're starting with:

    • New drywall: Prime first with PVA Primer.
    • New wood or glossy surfaces: Prime first with a multi-purpose primer such as Insl-X Stix Bonding Primer.
    • Existing surfaces with sheen: Sand until dust-free, then prime with a multi-purpose primer such as Insl-X Stix Bonding Primer.
    • Existing flat surfaces: No primer needed — apply Lime Wash Base Coat directly.
    • Over oil-based paint: Use a water-based universal primer first, such as Insl-X Aqua Lock Plus.
    • Bare masonry: Skip the base coat entirely and go straight to Lime Wash.
    • Going dark: Tint the base coat close to the final Lime Wash colour. Lime wash is translucent, and a white base under a deep colour will fight you.
