This one needs neutralising afterwards. Stain Remover is strongly alkaline, and Benjamin Moore's data sheet specifies neutralising the surface with Woodluxe Wood Brightener & Neutralizer (K017) as step 4. We don't stock K017 — we can order it in, or an oxalic-acid brightener such as Messmer's Part B does the same neutralising job and is on the shelf. Call us at 403 270 9696 if you're unsure.

Woodluxe® Wood Stain Remover (K015) is Benjamin Moore's highest-quality exterior stain remover. It strips both latex and oil finishes from exterior wood, and takes staining from mould, mildew, algae, dirt and water with them.

Be honest about whether you need it. If the old finish is translucent or semi-transparent and has simply worn away, a clean and a brighten will do. Stripper is for film-forming finishes — solid stains, semi-solids and old sealers that are peeling or flaking rather than fading.

Dilution depends on what you're removing

This is the part people get wrong. Mixing it too weak wastes a day; too strong on a light finish needlessly darkens the wood.

    Existing finish Water : Remover
Multiple coats, or solid / semi-solid stain Do not dilute
    Weathered solid colour or semi-solid 1 : 1
    Semi-transparent stain 2 : 1
    Transparent / translucent stain 3 : 1
    Clear finishes 4 : 1 (maximum)

    How to use it

    1. Test a small inconspicuous area at your chosen dilution and let it dry.
    2. Protect everything nearby — plastic and tape on adjacent surfaces, and soak surrounding plants with water before and after. Keep it off metal, fabric and lawn furniture.
    3. Apply liberally with a plastic garden sprayer, brush or roller. Vertical surfaces bottom to top.
    4. Let it stand 10–30 minutes depending on the age and type of finish.
    5. Agitate with a stiff bristle brush along the grain, then rinse with a hose or power washer.
    6. Neutralise the surface — see the note at the top.
    7. Let it dry thoroughly before staining.

Never mix in a metal container, and never combine it with other cleaners or chemicals.
