This one needs neutralising afterwards. Wood Restorer is alkaline (sodium hydroxide), and Benjamin Moore's data sheet specifies neutralising the surface with Woodluxe Wood Brightener & Neutralizer (K017) as step 4. We don't stock K017 — we can order it in, or an oxalic-acid brightener such as Messmer's Part B performs the same neutralising job and is on the shelf. Call us at 403 270 9696 if you're unsure.
Woodluxe® Wood Restorer (K016) is for wood that has gone well past dirty. It restores severely greyed and weathered timber to its natural colour, and lifts tannin bleed, water staining, mould and mildew staining, and the discoloured surface fibre that UV leaves behind.
Bleach-free, so it's gentler on the wood itself than a chlorine-based cleaner — but it is a strong alkaline product and it demands respect.
Cleaner or Restorer — which do you need?
- Dirty but not grey — All-In-One Wood Cleaner (K018) is enough.
- Genuinely grey and weathered — you want this. BM's own cleaner data sheet points at the Restorer for heavily greyed surfaces.
- An old finish that's peeling — strip it first with Wood Stain Remover (K015).
How to use it
- Dilute. Maximum 8:1 water to restorer. One gallon makes up to nine gallons of working solution. Normal jobs: half a can to 3½ cans of water. Stubborn areas: half a can to 2½ cans of water.
- Test first on a small inconspicuous area and let it dry.
- Apply liberally with a plastic sprayer, brush or roller. Vertical surfaces bottom to top.
- Let it stand 10–30 minutes depending on how weathered the wood is.
- Agitate with a stiff bristle brush along the grain, then rinse thoroughly.
- Neutralise the surface — see the note at the top.
- Let it dry thoroughly before staining.
Never mix in metal containers or with other chemicals. Spray surrounding plants with water before and after; rinse residue won't hurt them but the concentrate will burn foliage.
